Prod. 2057 - Fun and Fancy Free (III)  - Prod. 2043 - Seq. 03.0 - Starvation

11 12 13 14
Directed by Bill Roberts assisted by Mike Holoboff.
Layout by Al Zinnen.
This FINAL draft dated 11/6/1946 by "Toby" Tobelmann.

Animation by Woolie Reitherman, John McManus, Ward Kimball, Milt Neil, Bob Carlson, Harvey Toombs and Marvin Woodward, with effects by George Rowley.
What I do NOT understand is the credit for Blaine Gibson on scene 19! Should this not have been credited to M.R.?

  1. Milt Neil and Woolie together again! I guess this might've been a pre-shelf job, but now I'm interested in the exact date when Neil left Disney, seeing as he was active until Peter and the wolf, apparently. It's interesting to see Woolie handling the duck instead of the goof here, aswell, which is certainly unexpected.

  2. At last, we come to the greatest crossover twixt feature and short... the three main characters from the shorts in their first - and for decades only - feature together! A unique situation... with unique animator casting? Let's find out...

Inside the shack, as our three heroes sit at the table they are cast by character: Woolie Reitherman animates Donald and Goofy, while Ward Kimball animates Mickey (with some overlap when they all appear in the same shot). Don's freak-out is a typical Woolie assignment, the sombre shots of Mickey are more unusual for Ward.

In the scenes where Don tries to kill and eat the cow, they're all animated by Milt Neil (last credited on "The Three Caballeros"... were these scenes animated before the strike as well?), but with a smattering of contributions from other animators: Harvey Toombs and Bob Carlson on the cow (animated by Woolie in the opening shot), and Marvin Woodward on Mickey and/or Goofy.
