Originally called "Mickey and the Giant," the short Giantland was directed by Burt Gillett, released 11/25/1933. Animation by Les Clark, Cy Young, Johnny Cannon, Dick Huemer, Ham Luske (one scene with Dick W[illiams]), Bill Roberts, Fred Moore, Gerry Geronimi, Gilles Armand "Frenchy" de Trémaudan, Ben Sharpsteen, Ugo D'Orsy.

Through the magic of eBay, I was able to get the following modelsheet of the giant, originally the one that Burt Gillett himself had used (see my archives for more on the Burt Gillett "stash").

For those of you following my blog, I am sorry I have had VERY little time to update these past months! I am more busy than ever, directing my stop-motion film, and that takes most all of my time.
I will return here once in a while with more fun things, I promise!

    This short is one of those that seems to have been forgotten. It's a really nice piece. As a matter of fact I love most of the shorts of that period. The animators all had a spark in their work.

    Nice draft Hans: Internet Movie Database only credit Dick Huemer for animation in that short - when we see much more animators turn up here like Fred Moore, Les Clark, Ham Luske, Bill Roberts, etc.

    Take your time with the stop-motion film you're working on Hans, you never know - if you take your time, the greater success it could get, who knows?? I'll be looking forward to whatever you post next.

    This draft has me curious about how they annotated scenes...

    The Scene No. designated "1-A"... would that likely have been a shot that has been added to the original sequence after it was originally storyboarded or conceived?

The First Hyperion Ave. Studio

I used to wonder where precisely Walt Disney's first 2719 Hyperion Ave. studio was located, and what it looked like. Since reading about it first in the 1970s in Dave Smith's article in Michael Barrier's great Funnyworld, I spent hours looking at photos, aerial photographs, maps etc, until I found I had a pretty good impression. My aim here is to pass some of that on to you, as I have found there was an interest in this since I posted this image of the staff with their new Charlotte Clark dolls on my Facebook page: Looking through Cecil Munsey's Disneyana, it appears to me that the "funny looking" Mickey with the button eyes is actually an example of the 1930 British-made pose-able Mickey by the Dean's Rag Book company of London. Miffy the Movie in cinemas in Holland!

Finally, the film I directed called " nijntje de film " ( miffy the movie ) has gone into general release in 118 cinemas in Holland today! As you can imagine, I am very proud of this film. Interestingly, the reviews are split in two: the ones where the reviewer saw the film WITH a children's audience all give the film four out of five stars, while the ones who have NOT seen the film with kids give it three out of five, and mention "I doubt if the film can keep the young audience captivated." The "four star" reviewers note that it can - that the film "works!" In the Dutch TV guide Troskompas , in the very first review published a week ago, I found a very clear view on this: the reviewer wrote that he feels he has no way of judging the film, but as his kid loved it and was entertained all the way, he could not but give the film four stars.
