Elephants by Bill Shull, Milt Neil and Bill Tytla. Timothy Mouse by Woolie Reitherman. Effects by Dan MacManus, Jerome Brown, Art Palmer, Miles Pike and George Rowley.

It is again a bit interesting to see how the animators were credited. Take sc. 38: Bill Shull animated the elephants stampede. He is credited with "S& 3/4" which means 1.75 times Screen Footage, while the effects animator Palmer gets "1/8 S" or 178th of the Screen Footage. A crowd of elephants would not even get twice the Screen Footage. Things like this never seem fair - especially to the animator. (Been there, done that...)

Sometimes, like in sc. 1.1 and sc. 3, adjustments are made after the footage is awarded, like - a held drawing might be held longer. In sc. 1.1, Shull is awarded "3/4" but 3/4 of 12 is 9-0, not 5-0. MacManus is awarded "3/8 S" and 3/8 of 12 ft. is 4-08, not 8-0. In this case it looks like both have been re-evaluated during a sweatbox meeting, as directors could decide these things there, I have noticed from the notes in my possession. Anyway, this seems to be the reason that the actual awarded footage credtis are stated here - because they do not match the calculation that ws set previously.

    Specifically, Milt Neil animates Dumbo, Vladimir Tytla the scenes of the elephants gossiping, and Bill Shull the one scene of Mrs Jumbo and of the other elephants scared of Timothy.

    We see Woolie Reitherman's Timothy Mouse, and I think he handled it wonderfully!

    I'm surprised Bill Shull handles the stampede/fear scenes. I always figured it would have been 'Dance of the hours' alumni, with the way it looks and all.

The First Hyperion Ave. Studio

I used to wonder where precisely Walt Disney's first 2719 Hyperion Ave. studio was located, and what it looked like. Since reading about it first in the 1970s in Dave Smith's article in Michael Barrier's great Funnyworld, I spent hours looking at photos, aerial photographs, maps etc, until I found I had a pretty good impression. My aim here is to pass some of that on to you, as I have found there was an interest in this since I posted this image of the staff with their new Charlotte Clark dolls on my Facebook page: Looking through Cecil Munsey's Disneyana, it appears to me that the "funny looking" Mickey with the button eyes is actually an example of the 1930 British-made pose-able Mickey by the Dean's Rag Book company of London. Miffy the Movie in cinemas in Holland!

Finally, the film I directed called " nijntje de film " ( miffy the movie ) has gone into general release in 118 cinemas in Holland today! As you can imagine, I am very proud of this film. Interestingly, the reviews are split in two: the ones where the reviewer saw the film WITH a children's audience all give the film four out of five stars, while the ones who have NOT seen the film with kids give it three out of five, and mention "I doubt if the film can keep the young audience captivated." The "four star" reviewers note that it can - that the film "works!" In the Dutch TV guide Troskompas , in the very first review published a week ago, I found a very clear view on this: the reviewer wrote that he feels he has no way of judging the film, but as his kid loved it and was entertained all the way, he could not but give the film four stars.
