Prod.2001-Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (VII)

Seq. 4-D "Spooks"
- Seven animators for seven dwarfs: Bill Roberts, Dick Lundy, Bill Tytla, Bob Wickersham, Art Babbitt, Fred Moore and Fred Spencer. Snow White by Jack Campbell, birds by Eric Larson.

Most of the Snow White draft is of mid-October or mid-November 1937. The main exceptions are page 1, seq. 1-B, dated 1/5/37 and the soup sequence (6-B) of 2/4/37. This sequence is of 7/17/1937, thus relatively early...

  1. Interesting. With most of the characters on screen functioning as a group, this sequence seems almost to be cast what we would call in a short "by sequence" rather than "by character" (I guess "by section" or something would be more appropriate when we're talking about casting within a sequence).

  2. Two shots from the final film aren't shown on the draft. One is Scene 17, where two of the dwarf's shadows pass by a window with a bunch of the animals peeking in. The other is Scene 25, where grumpy tells Happy & Dopey that the soup cooking in the pot might be poisoned witch's brew. I don't have great animator identifying skills like the other's do, the animal scene looks like Larson's, while the latter is probably Lundy's. I wonder why they scratched them off the draft.

  3. You'll notice on the draft both those scenes are listed as being "eliminated", but then "is eliminated" was crossed out and a box drawn around the scene number, presumably to say that they were reinstated at the last minute. Unfortunately they don't say who animated them. It would be interesting to know why they were taken out.

  4. Interesting. Art Babbitt did quite a bit of animation. I love his animation of Dopey when he reacts to Snow White groaning and moving in the beds. Great cartoony animation. I had assumed it was Bill Tytla, but I've been proven wrong. Nice job. Thank you for posting these Mr. Perk.
