Prod. 2001 - Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (X)

Seq. 6-A "Dwarfs at Tub Washing"
- Dwarfs by Bill Tytla with three Dopey-with-soap scenes by Fred Spencer. One scene of Snow White by Ham Luske.

Nearly four contiguous minutes of masterful animation by Bill Tytla, this sequence is one of the most repeated highlights of Snow White.

Scenes 20 to 24 have so much more power to them than the cut scenes animated by Fred Moore in the bedroom in sequence 5-A! Check out this posting on Michael Sporn's Splog for drawings and pencil test of the last part of scene 20!

  1. Interesting how the Dopey-with-soap scenes were Fred Moore's "pilot" scenes but ended up being re-animated by Fred Spencer! Presumably Moore's original animation used an earlier model for Dopey - in "Hollywood Cartoons" Barrier mentions how he went through substantial design changes, and includes a model sheet from September 1936 "after six months of experiment". I wonder how much Tytla's animation needed to be changed... I guess he re-did it himself, otherwise it would be someone else's name on the draft.

  2. Hans,

In the very early 1970s, the hand washing sequence was the only section from "Snow White" available to the public here in the USA. I bought the super-8 mm sound version and studied it frame by frame on my dual-8 home editor. At the time, I did not know that it was the work of a Grand Master -- but I instinctively knew it was special and that as a student I couldn't have better examples to study from.

Thank you for posting all the info that you do.

  3. I always loved that sequence, I thought that it was well-animated, very funny, and wonderful entertaining music with it, and its interesting that almost the entire sequence is by Bill Tytla, with some Fred Spencer Dopey scenes (Originally by Fred Moore).
