Frank and Ollie Filmographies

Before Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston visited Holland back in 1984, they sent me their filmographies as prepared by the Walt Disney Archives. Now, 24 years later, I came across them, as I was sorting old papers here in Denmark...

    Hans, are there any published drafts of Frank and Ollie's scenes in any of the features aside from 101 Dalmations?

    Hi Kevin - I am not quite sure what you mean. Very few drafts have been made public except for on this blog... But all the features that Frank and Ollie worked on have them credited. Though in some cases not ALL of their influence is clear, as in Bambi on ice or Mr. Toad, where Frank supervised - and posed out most of the scenes, but other animators are credited...

    I guess I should have asked, are there any other published drafts outside of your stellar work here? I'm particularly interested in knowing specific shots that Frank or Ollie were completely responsible for (which we have thanks to you for 101 Dalmatians, at least to the extent that the drafts are accurate).

    Does that make more sense?

    Well, Kevin, first Jenny Lerew posted the draft for the short Nifty Nineties and All the Cats Join In (which really got me going over two years ago), then Mike Sporn had the first sequences of Pinocchio up, and Mike Barrier posted some pages from Song of the South. I think that is about it for published drafts outside of my blog, really. Maybe there were one or two more that I do not remember.

    Right now, with Sleeping Beauty coming up in the cinema and on BlueRay/DVD, I'm thinking I may start scanning that one.

Animation by Dave Hand, Jack King, Charlie Byrne, Norm Ferguson, Dick Lundy, Johnny Cannon, Les Clark, Ben Sharpsteen, Tom Palmer, Wilfred Jackson, Jack Cutting and Frenchy de Trémaudan. Found on the Treasures DVD Mickey Mouse in Black and White, Vol. 2 Disk 1 or on YouTube, though in very low quality here . A cute little film, this is actually a landmark in animation history. "Can I bring Rover?" Little Rover is, of course, none other than Pluto! Fergy's scene 27 is often "quoted" when discussing the origins of this the most famous of cartoon canines. It is very interesting to see the difference in drawing styles. Fergy tries to draw a dog and mostly does a very nice job. Compare this with e.g. Palmer's attempt in the final scene. Animation by Marvin Woodward (Lost Boys, John, Michael), Eric Larson (Peter), Harvey Toombs (Wendy), Don Lusk (Tink), Norm Ferguson (Nana), Jack Campbell (Father), Art Stevens, Milt Kahl (Father, Mother, Wendy), Marc Davis (Mother), Hal King (John), George Rowley (anchor chain, pixie dust, sail, ship), Josh Meador (cloud-ship). And that concludes the draft for Peter Pan, the fourteenth complete feature film draft on this blog! (Ok, you smart-alecks, we still need to see the last page of the Pink Elephant sequence...) Small One finished yesterday...

Taking a little break to prepare some new things. I must say that so far, the response to my Small One draft has been more underwhelming than I feared it would be. There IS no other place to find this information, folks! Look at the film (e.g. via the YouTube links I posted yesterday) and then check out the draft. You may very well learn something new... The good news: Holland in the Final! (Phew!!!) [Addition: It wasn't a pretty final, though quite exciting - which saw Spain win four minutes before the end of the extra time. Oh, well...]
