Prod. 2431 - R'Coon Dawg

By special request. Directed by Charles Nichols, layout by Lance Nolley, backgrounds Art Riley. Story by Ralph Wright (before or after Cookham and Dave Hand?) and Al Bertino. With animation by the director himself, and Norm Ferguson, Marvin Woodward and Fred Moore, with effects by Jack Boyd. Music by Paul Smith, whom we can hear a lot more from soon, when the True-Life Adventures DVD set is released, Dec. 5th.

This draft 2/1/1950, released 8/10/1951 (A year and a half later!!!) The copyright synopsis was written 7/18/1950, and the credit listing for same is of 9/20/1950. (And sporting a SCG 'bug' and a IATSE 'bug'. I am currently reading Tom Sito's very interesting 'Drawing the Line' on the animation unions, where these two unions are described. Obligatory reading!)

    Nice to see an animation draft whiche gives some idea of what effects animators actually did.

    As for the cartoon itself, I've always found it one of Nichols' better ones, but then again, I tend to be quite fond of "Mickey-and-Pluto-go-hunting" setups.

The First Hyperion Ave. Studio

I used to wonder where precisely Walt Disney's first 2719 Hyperion Ave. studio was located, and what it looked like. Since reading about it first in the 1970s in Dave Smith's article in Michael Barrier's great Funnyworld, I spent hours looking at photos, aerial photographs, maps etc, until I found I had a pretty good impression. My aim here is to pass some of that on to you, as I have found there was an interest in this since I posted this image of the staff with their new Charlotte Clark dolls on my Facebook page: Looking through Cecil Munsey's Disneyana, it appears to me that the "funny looking" Mickey with the button eyes is actually an example of the 1930 British-made pose-able Mickey by the Dean's Rag Book company of London. Two Years Passed...

Something just occurred to me: this blog had its second anniversary four days ago, and I forgot to celebrate... What was there to celebrate, you ask? Well, I was pretty happy to be able to explain the timing to a musical beat using different kinds of original Disney bar sheets , with click track examples - and I made a little pc metronome for just that. Then there are the Who is who's, by way of animation drafts for 62 short films, four whole features ( Pinocchio , The Three Caballeros , Alice in Wonderland and One Hundred and One Dalmatians ) and parts of several others; 14 Action Analysis Classes and Technical Manuals of the 30's; photos and articles .
